[Japan Travel]: Kyoto - Day 5 (Mt. Hiei)

Hello!

After all that notebook-whining it's finally time for another travel entry.
Unfortunately the last one for now. But don't worry I just finished planning my next trip for August, so new travel entries will come sooner or later and with a bit of luck awesome photos of Mt. Fuji then :D

My last day in Kyoto I spent a little bit outside: Mt. Hiei
Famous for it's huge temple facility - which is on the top of Mt. Hiei and thus quite isolated. I was the only foreigner up there and there weren't a lot of tourists, so after the crowded sakura-season stress, that was a nice change and a nice end of my trip :)
Here we go!~

Kyoto Day 5 (April 9th, 2010):

After quite a long bus ride I reached the temple facilities of Enryaku-ji.
Mount Hiei has featured in many folk tales over the ages. Originally it was thought to be the home of gods and demons of Shinto lore, although it is predominantly known for the Buddhist monks that come from the temple of Enryaku-ji.

As you can see it was really quiet up there. Almost no people.
No sunshine that day plus it was rather windy up there, thus cold. But that gave the whole thing a mysterious atmosphere :)

Inside one of the buildings. These statues look rather new!

World Peace Bell.

I don't have to mention that everything up there is nature pure and surrounded by forests and wild animals?!?
Even between the temple facilities you could either walk (which could take hours and I had to give up because I didn't have enough time to explore everything on foot!!) or you can take a bus! (expensive x_X ...)

Weird turtle?!

There was a lot of walking involved and you were alone in a deep forest for minutes or hours which could become scary, but seriously, there were soooo many things to discover!!!

This temple building was old and AWESOME!!!!! Inside no photos were allowed. I wish I can show you how awesome it was ;o;
Look at the stairrails!!! XD

In front of the entrance.

And this is it from farther away!

So, the next stop was ~20 min. away on foot, the other one 1,5hours.
I wanted to walk to both....

VERY old building! Fascinating!

Another beautiful temple complex quite high on the mountain, thus it was very windy. But I was all alone up there. It was awesome! :D

Small Japanese stone garden design with a sign that told you that you should take your time and listen to the sounds and with arrows telling you where to listen XDDDD

Hehe.

Twin trunks! XD

There were tons of these explanation boards everywhere. I was too lazy to try and read them all XD

And while walking there was suddenly this huge trunk in my way O__O;; ..... BANG!! XD

Very isolated, but cute temple :)

I'm not exactly sure what that was, but it looked extremely interesting and another Japanese young woman stopped and got out her camera after she saw me taking a photo of it! XDDDDD
Could be moss, but why is it orange? o_O

It was so quiet and nice in that forest. Almost no people and so many tiny things to discover on the way :D

Finally arrived at my next stop. It probably took me longer than the suggested 20 min., but I stopped to take photos very often XD

Look at those tall trees!!!!! O_____O

Then, I was on my way to the last stop which was 1,5hrs away. After managing half of the way I just climbed up and out of the forest (yes, you walk through a forest!!!) because I saw a huge statue.
Next to the huge statue was a restaurant and as it started to rain and I just missed the bus that would have brought me to my destination as well, I decided to go inside and eat lunch :D
I had to wait 1 more hour for the next bus and the people inside recommended not to walk, but to wait for the bus, so that's what I did, although taking the bus was so extremely expensive ;o; ... but I also didn't have so much time left anyways, so it was okay :) (I arrived there at around 2pm, so I got onto the next bus shortly after 3pm!)

I almost bought one of those tea cups that you can see in my picture :) ALMOST!! XD

That was the view you had right next to the restaurant. Usually that would be an awesome view, but the weather was no good that day :/ Quite an unlucky day anyways!

Well, down there the sun was shining, but not up here XD

Finally arrived at my last stop (had to take the bus to save time).

I loved thos boards that were telling a story. Explanations were only in Japanese, if at all!

Looks like a demon o__O

Another quite old building. Apart from me there were only the monks! It was shortly before closing time anyways and I had to hurry to catch the last bus back XD

Really nice, huh?

CUTE sign!!!!

So cool when you walk in a forest and suddenly discover another red, shiny temple! XD

And I made it. I caught the last bus back down to Kyoto Station and tried to take photos out of the bus, which was difficult, but finally the weather was getting better, so I tried XD

At Kyoto Station. My Shinkansen came :D

And I just couldn't resist and had to take a photo of Wii's CM with Arashi (*_________*)v

Cameras used: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 and Pentax K-x
The Pentax photos seem to be wider as their height is shorter.

And that was my Spring Vacation 2010. It was nice. Spring vacation in Japan is always great anyways (*___*)v
I hope you enjoyed it and let's hope my summer vacation 2010 will be just as good. It will be my first summer vacation in a long time in Japan, because last year I went back to Germany (^-^)>

Thanks for reading!

Much love friends!

moss can be orange, it's moss's version of flowering, I think (though maybe it's more like "fruiting")

I love your travel posts! You seem like someone who prefers to travel alone. Honestly, I like to travel alone too. This way we can enjoy our trip without having to think about other people and their needs. :)
Hope your summer holidays will be a nice one. :)

Thanks a lot ^-^
Yes, in fact I do!
In April I was not alone, though. And in summer I won't be alone yet again. It's more stressful indeed, more complicated to plan, but it's also nice esp. if it's people (family or friends) coming to visit me from Germany ^-^

Moss can have other colours than green, but to me this looks like laver, who often take on an orange colour (or other for that matter). Laver is a symbiosis between algae and fungi, and alagae contain many different pigments :) though I do spot some mosses here as well so it might still be it idk XDDD

Anyways, gorgeous photos as always ^___^ I'd love to go to Mt Hiei, since hiking is one of my favourite travel activities :) I can't wait to see photos from your summer vacation now!!!
