Kodomo no Omocha: Manga vs. Anime ~ My conclusion + a short review

So, after I´ve finished the anime yesterday I want to compare the manga and the anime.

I really loved the manga ! I love Obana Miho. I love her dark and sad stories ! I love the way she´s treating her young main characters.
I also liked the anime a lot, but not as much as the manga. Furthermore there are WORLDS between those two, that´s why I´m writing this XD

vs.

I´ll start with the manga, because I´ve also read the manga first !
For all those who don´t know: There are overall 10 books.
The mangaka is Obana Miho (other works: Partner, Pochi, Andante, Mizu no yakata).
Kodomo no Omocha means "The toy of a child or child´s toy".

Short Review:
Sana Kurata, a famous child actress, attends elementary school. But her school life is pretty chaotic - that´s mainly because of a boy called Hayama Akito. He causes trouble all the time ! He provokes the teachers and almost all the boys in class help him to do so. Sana decides to challenge Hayama, because she wants a peaceful school life ! So there the fun begins ! Sana´s not beaten that easily. She finds out the reason why Hayama acts like that and helps him a LOT ! (so cute ;__; ....) They become good friends, but Hayama still only opens his heart to Sana, but noone else !!

The relationship between Sana and Hayama at the very beginning XDD

A year later both attend middle school. They meet a lot of new people. One of them is Fuka (Kansaiben XDDD). Sana and Fuka become friends quickly, but Sana has a huge movie project and for that she´s leaving school for a while. During that time there are rumors spreading around that she´s going out with her co-actor Naozumi Kamura, but that´s not true. Those two are only good friends.
Because of this Fuka and Hayama start to go out with each other. Sana´s totally shocked when she comes to know about it ! After she´s been beaten up by some jealous fans of Naozumi, she´s now REALLY down ! The last movie scene almost causes her death. (btw. the movie is about "Mizu no yakata" another work of Obana Miho)
A lot of things happen. It´s too long to describe it, you just have to read it - furthermore I don´t want to spoil ^^

What I like so much about the manga is that THIS are elementary school kids (later first year of middle school) and Obana Miho is sooooo mean to her characters ! They have to suffer through sooooo much, although they´re soooo young !
Sana´s mother publishes a book and after that everyone knows that Sana´s adopted ! The press is chasing her. Hayama helps her through this time. Hayama on the other hand is always called 'devil' by his sister. She hates him, because their mother died, when Hayama was born. This is just the beginning. The two of them have to suffer through so much !!!!

So now on to my conclusion:

The anime is more shrill and funny. There´s a lot to laugh about, although there are some serious scenes, too. Well, Sana IS a very chipper girl and in the anime we experience her FULL POWER XDDDD

Oh and the anime has Babbit !!! It doesn´t appear in the manga, because it would just not fit in. Babbit is here for the fun parts and in the manga there are not so much funny parts ^^;;

The anime and the manga ARE very different:
The anime has an open end and there wasn´t so much hardship as in the manga ! I DID miss that a bit, but on the other hand there were a LOT of scenes in the anime, that didn´t appear in the manga.
For example: The realationship between Sana and Naozumi during their journey to New York. I didn´t like Nao in the manga, absolutely NOT ! But I´ve come to like him in the anime. There was EVEN a point when I preferred Nao and Sana to be a couple ! Although Hayama is my favourite character, but he was getting on my nerves when he got so close with Fuka !!! (that was also not this intense in the manga !)

I didn´t like Fuka in the manga, but at the end of the anime I liked her XD
A huge advantage of the anime is that we can experience the hyperactivity of Sana. It´s just not really possible in the manga, is it ? :)
I also like the voices of Sana and ESPECIALLY of Hayama a loooot ! <33

Spoiler Warning: (only a little) (mark the text if you want to read it ^^)
Well, if you ask me which end I like more, it´s definitely the manga´s end !!!
Why ? Hn~ well first of all because Sana and Hayama are really close at the end ! Because they´ve gone through so much hardship together and we really know that they´re in love with each other and everything is said.
In the anime on the other had it´s - as I´ve said - more an open end. We KNOW that they´ll probably tell each other their feelings after Hayama gets his black belt, right ? But it´s just not the same. Furthermore their realtionship is not as intense as in the manga !!

Spoiler End

I guess some people who liked the manga wouldn´t like the anime and the other way round !
But one should at least try to watch/read both, because they complement one another.

So, that´s all. I just wanted to say this much XD
Anyone wants to discuss this ?
And once again I have to apologize for my bad English x___X;;; *bows*
Jaa, mata ne ^^/~*

I'd always wanted to read or see this one, because a friend of mine like it very much. But I don't have any scanlations or anime ;_; And now that I've read your summary, I want to read it even more XD

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hn, is it not released in France ? o_O It´s even out here in Germany O_O

[identity profile] chatiel.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
No it's not here ;_;

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Uwoah O__O; ..... but it should not be a problem to find scanlations ^^;;

[identity profile] cocoaxlove.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
i liiked the anime beter, but hated the ending HORRIBLE! it ruined everything!! the mangas ending was better but.. could be even better

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Really ? What exactly did you hate about the anime ending ? I didn´t hat it, it was just NOT (so) good ^^;;
And YES the manga ending was PURE LOVE ^-^

[identity profile] totalximmortal.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the anime to a point, but I got infuriated with the New York arc, and then more infuriated with the Dare (or whatever his name was because the Chinese can't subtitle or beans ^o) ) arc because the subtitliing was so awful. and a complete lack of Hayama.

the manga focussed on the relationship I was more interested in, and the anime seemed to lose that half way through.

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the New York part was pretty cute, although I missed Hayama, too. And Brad was NOT a good substitute for him x_____X;;

Yes that´s absolutely true !! <33
I guess the anime was intended for young kids, the manga not really :]
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha that´s funny ^^ because I didn´t like the episodes with Sana´s Dad, but the NY season for some reason ^^;;
Yes it was really long and some of the 'Chibi' episodes were annoying. (Especially the one where Sana was a skunk x__X)

Hm, Babbit was funny, but you are right, there were times when it was REALLY getting on my nerves, especially the 'counting songs' (-_-#)

*nodsnods*

I've only just begun to watch the series. I've yet to see the manga anywhere in this state, but I'll be sure to look out for it. In most cases, I've prefered the manga to the series. Kinda like how one might prefer the Harry Potter novels as opposed to the movies. There's only so much that television can air, and often times alot of good scenes are cut out due to time. ;_;

[identity profile] callise.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
way cool!

I love this anime/manga as well...but I havent read all the manga or seen all the anime yet....

yeah I noticed the anime Sana is even more crazy!!!

and the things I missed on the manga well couldnt be in the anime...but obana's little thoughts on the colums I loved thoughts! I would lol over them......and she is just SO CLEVER! and funny! she amuses me so much

oh and I like Naozumi in the manga, I just got to him in the anime...I was kind of disappointed in his voice...I know he;s a kid, but it was a bit girly for me....it wasnt the voice I was expecting....but I liked him because he would randomly play the trumpet and it made me laugh

I LOVE Akito and Sana!!! I love them as a pairing....and I HATE Fuka! I havnt gotten to her in the anime...but if she threats MY pairing I bet I will HATE HER!!!!

random question for you...
could you not seem to get your friends into this manga/anime?

my friends would whine saying there just kids...and I go but they LOVE each other! they are old enough to know they love each other! and its funny and great! but my friends dont really get it....

oh and this is the only manga that has made me cry and I still love it! the messages are just so beautfull, and yeah life!

I think the anime so far does a pretty good job doing the manga justiced....

also this manga/anime breaks my theory that ususal the manga is more prevy, and violent and stuff, but the anime in this they pulled down Akito's pants and boxers! and int he manga it was just his pants, and I was like omg ha ha,

omg I do love Akito's voice! it fits him really well, and I LOL over his Shuish....shuish....

its so great to find a fan to blah to!!! got to leave getting rush out the door but great talking to a fan!

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Really ? Now that´s interesting. I did like Nao´s voice - it was pretty much what I´ve expected after reading the manga ^^; because he´s a pretty fragile person, so I thought the voice fits him pretty good (especially as contrast to Hayama ^^)

I absolutely can understand why you HATE Fuka (in the manga), it was the same for me ^^ (a fan of the couple Hayama x Sana just HAS to hate her I guess). It´ll be interesting if you will like her after you´ve seen the whole anime ^-^

Most of my friends liked Kodocha as well - most of them even because there WERE kids who are suffering, but on the other hand LOVING each other. It´s just really a great story !!! Kodocha is a series that focus on KIDS and the power they have ! It shows that kids can do more than adults might expect, but they also have to suffer more than we would expect, nee ? That´s what I love about Kodocha ^^

Yes I´ve cried several times, too (-___-) but I like mangas the most when they make me cry XD *coughs*

^_____________________^ You´re welcome.

[identity profile] callise.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah I get really picky about voices....my friends get annoyed when I go on and on about dub and sub voices....because I really get picky, and go omg this persons voice didnt fit this body, and all my friends go THERE FINE! and I pout and go nope!

anyway I just though his voice was a bit too girly...and I was bummed his hair was a light blond...I didnt like the blue silver thing....(I'm werid)

LOVE AKITO'S VOICE!

yeah when you have a pairing you tend to HATE anyone that trys to RUIN your pairing....

I will tell you when she shows up how I feel about her....she still isnt here yet...

lucky...I have no one to talk to Kodocha about, because one friend though it was WERID! on the first manga, 2 others though its about kids, its dumb, that kids are too young to care about, and that they dont know what love is yet, and blah blah blah and I havent bother trying with other friends, because they were all my best friends...so after that I said fine...I will just rave in my lj about...

I just though Obana is SO FUNNY! she cracks me up!!! like her story about how life is better when your dumb, and the crazy stuff she talks about and I thought the story/manga was very interesting, and the stuff that made me cry was in the manga, with Akito and the werid creepy kid that wanted to kill himself, and wanted Akito to join, and Akito was like my mother died to save me I cant die...and he gets cut...I there were other parts on the manga that made me cry my eyes out...mostly when they talk about how important life is, and stuff....and OMG in the manga when Akito was little the dino story, its just so heart moving manga....

I need to finished reading the manga....and watching the anime....

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe~ I´m the same ! Furthermore I always spend hours trying to figure out where I heard a voice before ! XDDD ("Wait, wasn´t that Trunks´ voice, too ?" XDDD) It´s HORRIBLE for my friends, but fun for mEh XD

Yes, the color of Nao´s hair was really a bit strange ^^

*nodsnods* I guess that´s how it is.
Yes pleaso do so ^^

That´s a pity, but luckily you´ll ALWAYS find people in lj or the internet with the same interests/opinions ^^

Yes there were indeed a lot of scenes that were really touching, right ? ;__;
Sana and Akito - crying together - that´s always very touching (;__;)
I was crying when Sana came to know about Fuka and Akito on the phone while she was far away because of the movie (x___X)

Yes, hurry up *gg* ^-^

[identity profile] callise.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah thats what I LOVE about LJ

OMG when Akito's father was at the hopstial, and Akito's sister was like what will happen if our father dies...and Akito says how should I know...but when Sana comes in he hugs her and asks her what will happen if his father dies....and he's all worried, I was like OMG!!!!! that is a cute scene...shows he does care...but Sana's the one that gets to see...

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
^-^ indeed.

Yes, that´s right. Some time in the anime it is Tsuyoshi-kun (I guess) who said Akito ONLY opens his heart to Sana-chan, but noone else !! That´s sooo cute ;__;

[identity profile] akitokun48.livejournal.com 2006-06-01 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been a fan of Kodocha for years now, what can I say, I'm a sucker for shoujo. XD

I like the anime and the manga ALMOST Equally. I watched the anime first, and two main things upset me. First of all, the New york ark... Not related to the story in any way, just some random bullcrap filler-like Naruto now- Oh, and the second was the ending, and the few episodes leading up to the ending. After I finally finished the series (I've seen the series probably 4 times... up to the new york ark, then once past. Never had the urge to watch it past again.) I screamed and punched the wall as hard as I could. Such a great series deserves to have a better ending.

The manga was great, and since it had a lot less of the random cuteness and sana chan rap (OMG XD) it was a lot more serious in my opinion.

The saddest part of the series HAS TO BE the part where sana's in the movie with the dying mother... aaarrggh, it's such a good series!!!

It was my favorite for a long time, this marmalade boy/crack mix.

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2006-06-01 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe~ yes I´m pretty much into shoujo mangas, too ^^ (but not only :P)

Hn~ it would be interesting how I would feel about Kodocha if I had watched the anime first ^^
Ah, and I still haven´t watched the Kodocha OVA, but I guess it is not that important.

Yes that was pretty sad ^^ but for me it wasn´t the saddest part. What I liked about the anime was (it didn´t appear in the manga) when Sana-chan couldn´t say "akuma /devil" because of Akito. That was soooooo cute (;_____;)

Oh yes, Marmalade Boy was great, too (;___;)

btw. I like you lj name ^^

[identity profile] fatesong.livejournal.com 2006-06-25 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I saw the first two episodes of that about a month and a half ago. =D

Unfortunately, the library was never updated. X-x

[identity profile] smileheart.livejournal.com 2006-07-08 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my, I really loved the manga very much! I read the manga before I watched the anime. And til this day, I like the manga better. The anime is pretty good. But so far I only watched up to episode 20. ^^; I still have a long way to go. XD

At the end of the manga...it was soo awesome. True love right there! Akito and Sana forever! Yeah Fuka and Nazo were okay...it just when it got to the point Sana and Akito weren't together because of them...I was a little mad. At first. I wanted Akito and Sana admit their feelings soo bad. But they did, in the end. ^^

I am looking foward of watching the rest of the anime. But in my heart...the manga was amazing. ^__^

[identity profile] chiibi.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Very good topic. Hehe I might get a little ranty...

Simply, I love the anime when it keeps to da manga.
And some things that did not. I list them now...XD

*The insanity. OH THE INSANITY. The anime sure made me laugh way more than the manga did. The director is on CRACK. You know he directed Elf Princess Rane and Jubei-chan, right?
*Babbit. People, Babbit is love. XD
*The seiyuu. Excellent cast. Excellent acting. Kudos to Sana-chan's and Hayama's seiyuu ESPECIALLY.
*The MUSIC. The composers need to win an award. All of the music is nothing short of beautiful.
*The artwork. I prefer the anime artwork and character designs to the manga ones...it's those golden eyes....yeah. XD
*Zenjirou. Like teh Babbit, I was a little disappointed he wasn't in the manga.He's really funny. There's a character that looks like him but it's not him:Yonma-san.
*Take-chan. Sana-chan's dad. Oh man...that arc made me cry a river...I probably cried like FIVE times...

What I did NOT like about the anime:

*THEY SKIPPED THE DAMN OMFGHAYAMAMIGHTDIE arc!! RAWR! I loved that part in the manga! Because it was so beautifully dramatic and it showed how much Sana needed him and argh! Plus...Hayama IS my favorite character and I'm your average sadistic-loves-to-see-young-boys-get-hurt-and-angst-fangirl so...YOU put 2 and 2 together. XD *shot* I understand if the Komori-wants-to-kill-Hayama-and-himself-thing is too dark for the anime viewers but OH PLEASE! They should have done it differently instead of omitting it all together. >=(

*They replaced the OMFGHAYAMAMIGHTDIE situation with oh noes...Fuuka's hurt and can't see. Which was TOTALLY stupid...and I don't like anime Fuuka anyway.

*The New York arc. Need I say more?

*How Sana-chan and Hayama acted by using people to avoid their own feelings. I hated that. It never ever lasted that long in the manga. They totally dragged it out. I was like DAMMIT WHEN DO THEY CONFESS!? PLEASE STOP BEING STUPID! It seriously drove me up the wall. I wanted to kill Tsuyoshi for interrupting the almost-confession....grrrrrrr.

Okay I'm done. XD You all described the manga's beauty wonderfully: it's dark, realistic, has children dealing with REAL situations...gawd it's effing amazing...Obana, you rawk. ^_^

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, so the director directed Jubei-chan ?!? That explains a lot of things then ! XDDD
And yes I agree, the insanity is definitely a plus in the anime, but it wouldn´t have fit in the manga ^^ .. so it´s good to have both: anime AND manga, nee ? ^-^

OOOOH yesh!!! Babbit just rules ! XDDD

*nods* I agree again, I SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO²³²³²³²³ love Akito´s seiyuu ! And Sana´s voice is just too perfect !!!! Great ! ^-^b

Oh you actually liked the arc with Sana´s dad ? I didn´t like it :/ ... I don´t know why though ... but it was getting on my nerves and for me it wasn´t really that sad :/

*THEY SKIPPED THE DAMN OMFGHAYAMAMIGHTDIE arc!!
*nodsnodsnodsnodsnods* that was one of the best things in the manga and we got to know more about Hayama ;__; .. I so loved it .. it´s soo sad ;__; .... *sigh*

I did like the anime Fuuka more than the manga one XDDDDDD ... but I generally don´t like her :P

Oh, I thought the New York part was pretty funny XDDDDDD ... too long ... not necessary .. but kind of funny ^^ ... and it made me like Nao a bit more ^^

Thanks for telling us your opinion ! ^___^/

[identity profile] chiibi.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure! Yeah...I liked the Dad arc probably because I'm also a Daddy's girl ^_^;; And Sana bonding with him was very sweet. Imagine if she actually found out...x_x that'd be HARSH...

I didn't watch much of the NY arc so maybe I am being too harsh with it...but replacing Hayama with Brad was a no-no! >=/ lol I was like "You're not Hayama-kun! You're an imposter!!!" lol lol.
