[Anime / Manga]: Bakuman and Death Note

Hey!~

I finally got to watch "Bakuman".
I know a lot of you have recommended it and I think I remember [livejournal.com profile] hinoai mentioning it AGES ago when the manga first came out. I was really interested as I loved Death Note (same mangaka / author team, but more about that later).
I just never got a chance to / lost interest / had no time, but no FINALLY!

And I'm SO glad I did!
What a great series! Of course, I did expect quite a bit coming from the same team that created Death Note, but it far exceeded my expectations.
I never thought that a series about creating manga would be SO interesting if you're not really interested in that kind of stuff, but they did an awesome job!

SPOILER WARNING: Obviously, if you haven't read both series yet, you shouldn't go on.

BAKUMAN:

I love this series to bits and pieces. There are so many lovable characters and it's just a cute, hilarious, entertaining series that manages to drag you into it completely.

I love all the hints they give to their previous series, especially Death Note as they worked together on it.
When I saw so much Hikaru no Go stuff in the background, I noticed the similarity in drawing style and researched and was shocked to find out that Takeshi Obata worked on that one as well. ^^;
I watched that series in 2001-ish! And it took me THAT long to figure it out? I suck! XD ....

But I especially love the fact that they praise and mention so many other series.
Of course, the big ones are all in there such as One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Dragonball ... but also really old ones like "Ashita no Joe" etc.

The best thing, though, is that it's here and there based on real people, real events etc.!
I think it's awesome that they were allowed to name several famous mangaka and even base some characters on real Shueisha editors and stuff.
It makes the whole series even more interesting! ;)

I'm quite sure I missed a lot of the hints towards other manga series they gave, but the ones I caught were amusing.

Of course, there were a lot of obvioius ones.
I cracked up when I saw their Dragonball Fushion-Ha pose! XD

One of the things I like the most about the series is the friendship between Mashiro and Takagi.
I also love the "nicknames" they use for each other. It's such an adorable relationship and sooooo much bromance! (*____*)b

Every time when they were not working on something together or when it looked like they were drifting apart, I was so sad. XD

Though they're NOT the funniest charas in the series, I LOOOOVE their stupid faces and reactions and we get a lot of them! :3

And seeing them utterly happy when they're one step closer to their dream is the best thing ever! :3

Takagi became my favorite character really quickly - although I had a hard time once even more awesome characters were introduced later on. XD
Of course, I like Mashiro as well, but for some reason I'm a lot more into Takagi. *shrugs*
Maybe it's because I can identify myself with him a bit better? I suck at drawing. I have zero talent. But I'm not all that bad when it comes to making up stories. Maybe that's why?

It's also Takagi's personality as I think Mashiro is a tad bit too romantic for my taste. XD

But I love the two of them together as Ashirogi Muto the BEST!

At first, I didn't think much about it ... but the longer they were together the more I wanted this to work out! ^^
He didn't seem to be serious at all in the beginning, so I was wondering what would happen once the phone calls with Yuri started. ^^;; ....

Speaking of Yuri, I really thought THIS would happen. I really did! ^^;

But I'm utterly happy with this outcome as well.

After all, Hiramaru became one of my absolutely favorite characters! No other character made me laugh that hard!
The relationship between him and his editor is GOLDEN!!! I love 'em!

And he kind of reminds me of my current self! ^^; ....
If you have nothing you really wanna do, things you have to do are just painful and feel like torture. LOLZ

No matter what he does, he's not happy with it. He doesn't wanna do it.
The only difference is that he's a genius. He doesn't wanna draw manga, but he can do it so easily.
I'm not a genius at all. At least I haven't found anything I'm genius-like at. XD

Anyway, I also would have been super happy with Fukuda x Yuri as he is one of my other favorite characters in the series.
I seem to go for the outgoing, violent ones recently, huh?
But I love the fact that he never shuts his mouth and immediately says what is on his mind. And while he seems a bit rebellious, he always worries about his friends.

That's why this totally deserves the name "Fukuda Team". I love them all so much! ^^

However, I never really was interested in the series he created as a mangaka. Never sounded like my kind of thing.

Oh, and I wonder if that will ever happen??!! Like for real?? XD I can't imagine it. XD

I think I probably would have liked Eiji's works the best. I am into mainstream stuff after all.
But I also liked most of what Ashirogi created.

I know there's a REAL one shot of Hiramaru's Otter #11 manga, but I'd also would love to read a bit of PCP! ^^
And OF COURSE Reversi!!! (*___*)
AAAND CROW!!!!!

It's funny that I didn't like Eiji at first, but that quickly changed. It's hilarious how freaky he is, but I like freaks like that.
He's a true genius. I envy people like him who can truly enjoy what they're doing and are GOOD at what they enjoy doing. Must be one of the most happiest things in the world.

I love how he's always helping the others, especially Ashirogi, "behind the scenes". That's also why I wasn't worried at all when he finally decided to end one series. LOLZ
It's so much fun to read online where people are guessing which real mangaka could be behind Eiji, but I think it's probably more than one famous mangaka that went into Eiji's chara. What do you think?

I love guessing all the connections to reality like ...... (it's just my assumptions, though):

I'm 100% sure that Reversi is referring to Death Note.
They don't want to make the series longer than necessary by adding new opponents. They want the two main charas to fight each other in the end and end it in a way they can be satisfied with.
My theory is that they were not happy with how Death Note ended. The series popularity dropped after L's death and the new "opponents" weren't that good. I remember that back then I also hated this sudden twist of things. It didn't feel like Death Note anymore.
Maybe they regretted that they made the series longer than necessary. Maybe they wanted to let it end with Light and L fighting each other. I mean .. the Live Action actually had a different end - maybe you still remember that? ;)

The PCP news on TV. Takagi is devastated because someone has tried to copy the crimes in their series PCP.
As far as I know something similar has happened with Death Note ... like people creating notebooks where they write the names of people they want to die ... and stuff like that?
Don't you think they were referring to that maybe?

Tsugumi Ohba (= Takagi + Mashiro's uncle??!!):
He actually had a gag superhero series called "Tottemo Luckyman" which resembles a lot the series that Mashiro's uncle created.
And he seems to be good at the same kind of stories as Takagi. Death Note would be totally something Takagi could have come up with. After all Reversi = Death Note. ;P

I'm sure there's more. I'd love to hear if anyone here actually did some research and found out some more connections to reality and real people??? (*____*)

My favorite characters are: Takagi, Fukuda, Hiramura and Eiji, I guess. ^^;
The characters that probably have some similarities with me are: Kaya and Nakai -__-
I like Kaya. Just like me she doesn't have any dreams and gets a bit depressed that all her friends have dreams they work hard on, but she has no idea what she should do with her life. Sounds familiar? T_T
Nakai ... I hate him. In my eyes he's such a loser. And yet ... he's very similar to the current me. He hasn't completely given up, but he also lacks the motivation to get back on track. *sigh* ...

Ah, there's also a Live Action coming this year!
Just look at the cast! This sounds promising!

I also heard that they left out a few scenes in the anime, so I'm very tempted to also read the manga. (*_*)b ......

DEATH NOTE:

I already wanted to re-watch the anime, but after watching Bakuman I HAD TO!
It's been pretty much a decade since I last touched Death Note. Back then I started out with the manga, then the anime came out ... and finally the live action (though by that time I already lived in Japan, I think).

I really loved it back then. ^^;
Though there were a few parts that I disliked.
Yet I think it's almost a perfect masterpiece.

Re-watching it, I had to smirk and think of Takagi many, many times.
A lot of things make more sense now as through Bakuman we could peek behind the scenes .. kind of. *g*

As far as I can remember not much has changed since I first read / watched it.
Matsuda is still my favorite character.

But this time I'm content with the end. I think when I first read it I didn't like how Light came to an end.

I also thought that innocent Light who had forgotten all about the Death Note was awesome. ^^;

This time I thought how awesome Light's seiyuu (voice actor) is. I think I didn't give him that much credit the first time ... simply because my beloved Yamaguchi Kappei did L's voice.
You know ... he did a lot of characters in the 90s ... might have been before your time, but maybe you know his voice? (*_*) .....

I'm into having characters locked up somewhere for whatever purpose where their hair grows longer and they look even more awesome than before (see Ichigo - Bleach / Light - Death Note / Trunks - Dragonball)... [/ crazy sadistic fangirl]

All I can tell you is that I really kind of liked Mello this time. NO IDEA if I liked him back then. I know that I didn't like Near and the whole idea of someone else taking over for L .... but whatever. XD

Re-watching Death Note was super interesting and after you're finished it's so depressing. ^^;
But it's a great series. I thought it might be boring to re-watch as I know how it ends, but it wasn't. And apparently I forgot about a LOT of things, so it was FUN!
If I had to decide I think I like Bakuman better. I'm not too much into depressing series and Bakuman was just soooooooooooo awesome! I feel like re-watching it right away!~ (Of course, I won't! ....)

Over to you!!~

Yamaguchi Kappei <33333 I will always love my Ryuichi!!

I had never thought about it before, but now I do think that being forced to continue beyond what would have been the "perfect" ending of Death Note (both die, or just Light like in the actual end, instead of L but at that time) was what they were referring to in Bakuman. Hmmmmm. It just makes sense!

My favorite characters were Miho and Aoki! Although, thinking back, I would have loved it if Miho and Kaya got together, yummmmm. :) I really loved Mashiro and her's relationship, since it was so pure, but I wouldn't have been able to do something like that. I'm a lot more like Kaya in that I have to see my special person all the time and do things together constantly.

Oh, and I worked with Hattori (Eiji's editor) in real life! He looks EXACTLY like the anime version, and I was all *______* when I met him. At the time, only the Bakuman manga was out, not the anime, but I was a huge fan and in total awe.

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2015-02-18 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you like Yamaguchi Kappei, too? (*__________X)b

Yeah, their relationship was so adorable and pure, but just like you said I would have gone insane. Couldn't do something like that. Had a long distance relationship once and it was already tough. What they're doing is just insane! Cute but insane! XD

Haha, funny. I just though the opposite = Mashiro x Takagi would have been yummm! ;P

EEEEHHH???? Really? He REALLY looks just like that? Ahhh~ that's beyond awesomeness! (*_*)b
Thanks for the insider info. You're so lucky! (*_*)b

I've been a fan of the mangaka for ages. Well, since Hikaru no Go. Bakuman made me see a lot of his works in another light as I always wondered why he does not write his own manga like other mangaka. You should really read the manga. I thought it was a lot more interesting than the anime.

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2015-02-18 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, certainly! What did you think about the parallels to Death Note, though?
You have read Death Note, right?

AAAAH~ Yes, I definitely will. Actually wanted to do that today, but now I'm too hooked up with Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge that I can't .... T___________T .....
WAAH! Need to make a few Sunako icons for LJ! Kekeke~ .... (._.)/~*

[identity profile] asahifirsa.livejournal.com 2015-02-18 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really recall too much of Death Note. I read the manga in Japanese when my Japanese wasn't that good yet and it has a lot of text. I didn't really like it too much after L died. I only started watching the anime but thought it wasn't well animated and the same as the manga so why bother. I did enjoy the Live Action movies though as far as I recall.

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2015-02-18 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
(O__________O'') .....

Well, I get why you liked the Live Action. After all it had a different ending in the favor of L, but why was everyone losing interest after L's death? I mean, I HATED it, too, but I couldn't just stop reading there. I couldn't! XD
But all the more I think my Bakuman theory about Reversi = Death Note is TRUE! :D

[identity profile] asahifirsa.livejournal.com 2015-02-18 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I did finish reading it. I just don't recall much about it. I know that Light dies in the end, I think he was tricked by the Shinigami? Don't care. Doesn't the live action end with L and Light killing each-other? It's been some years since I've seen it.

I loved the art in it and some parts of the story were great, but it probably would have been better shorter? At the end I was glad it was over. With Hikaru no Go... I still wish we'd get a continuation. Even if it's just a short story here or there. I loved that manga/anime.

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2015-02-19 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. The Shinigami had no reason to trick him. It was Near, L's successor. T_T
I think the Live Action ends with L winning against Light, Light dying in the end.

I think the best thing would have been that they kill each other somehow. L is dying anyway, so at least he could have set it up so that after his death everybody knows that Light = Kira .. but oh well.

^____^

[identity profile] asahifirsa.livejournal.com 2015-02-19 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
From the summary on wikipedia: " Ryuk realizes Light has lost and uses his personal Death Note to kill Light with a heart attack, as he had promised to do one day at the beginning of the story." <--- So I did not remember totally incorrectly :)

And they do both die in the movie, and once again Ryuk is the one to kill Light: "It is revealed that L is alive and wrote his name in the Death Note with the intent to die almost a month in advance, thereby foiling Light. The task force did not leave for the U.S. but instead surveilled Light from another location, therefore hearing and observing Light's confession as Kira and replacing Light's Death Note with a decoy. Cornered, Light pleads with Ryuk to kill L and the task force. Instead, Ryuk writes Light's name in the Death Note, telling Light that anyone who uses the Death Note is banned from heaven and hell and will instead spend eternity as nothingness. Light dies in his father's arms, begging him to believe he acted as Kira to carry out justice.

Knowing that supernatural events were involved, the official line put out by L and the investigation team was that Light was killed by Kira. Twenty days later, Soichiro and L meet one last time before L dies peacefully. One year on (on Light's birthday) Soichiro keeps to the lie to Sayu and his wife, as Sayu adores Light but did not support Kira's actions. Misa also celebrates Light's birthday, still loving him but has no recollection of the Death Notes."

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2015-02-19 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but that was at a point where Light was already at his end anyways. He would have been imprisoned and had led a miserable life, blindfolded and isolated, so that he can never become Kira again.
In a way, it was nice for Ryuk not to wait until he would die naturally. ;P

I see. So I didn't remember correctly what happened in the movie.
That just means that they never got their desired end (L and Light both dying at the same time more or less) - if my assumptions concerning Reversi (Bakuman) were right, that is. ^^;

I still think the manga is the best version of all in existence. I hated the fact that they made some stupid additions in the anime before L's death ... like L out in the rain and then even wanting to wash Light's feet. T_T .... WTH?? ....

[identity profile] angelbott.livejournal.com 2015-02-19 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I loved both in manga.. xD [*coughmaybereadGintamaitnotcomebytrustmefeelswillkillcough*]
I really glad as I read this post of both.. xDD

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2015-02-19 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I tried to get into Gintama a few times, but it just doesn't click, I suppose. ^^;

[identity profile] shiinait.livejournal.com 2015-02-24 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I read Bakuman manga, and it is so hilarious!
But now, I became curious of the anime... If you suggest it, I'll see it!

[identity profile] chochajin.livejournal.com 2015-02-24 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, apparently there are more scenes in the manga that aren't in the anime, so I don't know if you want to watch the anime. I really liked it, though. ^___^
