Aww, this post is kind of cute! Roaches are pretty commonplace here so I've become completely oblivious to them. (Well, I don't like them, but killing them isn't a pain.)

First of all you shouldn't be too worried about bacteria because roaches are very clean insects, they are constantly cleaning themselves and our very own hands have more bacteria on them - even after washing - than roaches do.

From my experience, roaches don't go into the refrigerator, but they can eat pretty much anything and if you see one you should dispose of it -immediately-, put it outside, because they can survive 10 days with their head cut off and weeks without food. Squashing them isn't good because there might be eggs inside them so your best bet might be just to contain it in something and throw it outside. Also, they like darkness so check in all the dark corners if you want to find any.
