WTF!!! It's just TOO much, you know???!!!!
It's past midnight now.
I'm so exhausted and yet I'm not sure if I'll be able to sleep.

Apart from all the crap that's going on at work right now .... plus all the busy times ... there's a typhoon coming now!
I barely managed to ride my bike home.

I had my balcony door open because I didn't know there would be a typhoon.
I was worried the whole time.

When I finally came home and turned on the light.....

... I saw a cockroach quickly disappearing behind some boxes.

WTF????!!!!

It's the first roach I've ever seen in my life.
They are quite rare in Germany.
And it wasn't too long ago that THAT HAPPENED!!!

After coming home from work at around 22:15pm, it took me until 22:45pm until I finally managed to "get" it.
I had no idea they were so fast!!

I tried to hit it a few times, but no chance. Finally it hid in a huge teabag box and that's when I grabbed the box and put it outside on my balcony!
I hit against the box a few times to make sure the roach was in there and then closed my balcony door.

I have NO idea how that thing came into my apartment!!!
I have NO idea for how long it has already been here!!! And if there are more!! I doubt it, though.
I always come home at night (when it's dark) and when I turn on the light, I might be still be able to see them disappear quickly or at least HEAR them.
As you know my apartment is small ..... actually it's only ONE ROOM!! The kitchen and my bedroom and ... my bathroom ... it's all in ONE ROOM!!!!
I probably would have realized earlier if I had them for a long time??!!!

Now .... as I've never seen one, I have NO IDEA WHAT TO DO!!!!
It's so late now and I'm sooo tired and exhausted. I hope I'll be able to sleep.
As soon as I have time = this weekend, I'll empty all my closets and shelfs and move them and try to clean everywhere I can reach.
There are some spots I can't reach no matter what, though.

But what I'm REALLY worried about is my food!!!!
I have no idea what roaches can do and can reach?!
Do I have to throw away everything that was not in the fridge? Can they eat through plastic packages like noodle packages or cereal packages???

WHAT SHALL I DOOOOO??????????????????????????????????????? HELP!!!!

I still had roach traps luckily. I never used them, because I thought they might just attract them (if you don't have them).
But now I've spread them throughout my room. I hope they're not dangerous for me, but I think they have to eat it in order to be killed, so as long as I don't eat the traps I should be safe??!!

That's what I'm using right now. Do you have any better ideas?

I also tried to kill the monster with an insect spray, but it didn't work!! Only on me, I don't feel well now, but luckily I only used a little bit and turned on the air conditioner afterwards.

What about their eggs? Is there any way to find them???

So, I know quite a lot of you who live in Japan already had problems with those little monsters here. Any tips?
Anybody else who can help me??????

I'm trying to reasearch in the internet as well, but seriously I am sooooooo tired, I really should go to bed and try to sleep for now.

Seriously what's going on lately?? Gimme a break!!!!

[music]: sound of the typhoon outside

You think it's enough to cover the kitchen with a normal plate? It shoulde be too heavy for them.
I'm not sure if there's anything I can to about the washing machine drain, but I'll see about that.
It could have come from my balcony as well. I have my bio garbage always on my balcony to attract any insects to go THERE instead of INSIDE my apartment and so far it worked. It might have been today that they/it sneaked in ..... I hope so.

What about my food?? Do you know if they can eat through plastic packages? What about stuff in the fridge?? ARGH!!!

*reasearch research*

Thanks! You, too!! *hugs*

eeek roaches i've never seen one in person, XD

my aunty had a plug that would keep away all kinds of insects and animals, you should try and get one of them.

Just don't kill them whatever you do,(i once killed a spider in my room and the next night there was a bigger spider, my dad said it was a search party lol. don't kill the roach incase bigger ones come O_O).
Remember theres a purpose to everything on the planet, no i dea what the purpose of a roach is but i'm guessing it's a food source for some other creature.

DONT SQUASH THEM
Ive heard if they are carrying eggs, if they are developed it can cause them to hatch and you would have a lot of new baby roaches
You are best trying to catch any and putting them outside or maybe flush them down the toilet!

I hope it gets better!

Hmm.. I live in Brazil and we have a lot of cockroaches, specially during summer. What we usually do is keep traps like the one you've got, and if we see any alive we just smash them (quite disgusting, but quick).. I also keep the drains covered, in case they come through them. There are some cockroaches that can fly (I don't know if the japanese kind do) so they can come through the window.
And I don't think you should have any problems with your food if they're not exposed, I mean, if they're in proper bags, covered or in the freezer. It's just uncovered food that attracts them.

also extra eins für goki, kein normales.

Here in Italy normally kill them as soon as we see them.
I don't think it's been there for so long, you'd have already noticed. However, a trap like the one you've got is a nice way to get rid of them.

catching up
Hi, C! It's been a long time. I read all your recent entries today and hope all the stuff with your school resolves itself. The number of changes and transitions there seems excessive. Are you sure you don't want to change to a different school and location for a new experience?

It's too bad you can't get the manager position. That could be a good career for you in Japan. I've heard of foreigners running schools over there, so are you sure you can't do it?(by law?)

About roaches: do you have airtight "tupperware" and/or ziplock bags? That should keep them out (also moths).

Best to you!

Re: catching up
Generally I wouldn't mind to change schools and location, but it depends on many factors and I have to wait what my boss wants to talk about.
I don't wanna do anything that could disturb my studies at this point.

I don't really want the manager position and it sounds better than it is, really. That's not a career in Japan at all anyway and I've never thought about running my own school here in Japan as I'm not a native speaker and that's not what I want to do anyway!!

I already bought tupperware and stuff and I hope my food will be safe from now on.

Thanks for your comment it really has been a while, huh?
Hope you're doing fine?

Yuck! Roaches are endemic in NYC, usually in apartment buildings. Since I moved to a house I haven't seen any. They don't eat through wrappings, but they will get into anything that's not sealed properly. Those traps are supposed to be effective and fairly safe, the bait is sealed inside. Roaches like water, so they usually hang out around pipes, it's good to block them if you can.

Although they are disgusting, they they can't hurt you--they don't bite or carry diseases. I would be WAY more scared of a mouse, so I am glad you didn't see a mouse!

If you see a cockroach again, kill it by squirting dish soap on it. Works like a charm. It might not die immediately but it won't take long for it to slow down and stop in its tracks. I heard squishing them releases eggs and is a bad idea.

Cockroaches can't eat through plastic boxes, but they can chew their way through ziplocs and such when motivated. Packets of food (like gravy mixes, pastas, etc) are in danger from them as well. In my experience, they prefer either sweet or savory - going for the gravy packet more than the pasta for example.

Those kinds of roach traps don't seem to work well, although I've had more success with the traps with liquid in them. Boric acid is a safe method of killing roaches - here's one page about it http://www.mouthstick.net/tipsbits/boric.htm but there are lots more.

I refuse to try to squish a roach because they always manage to run towards me and attack me. Somehow they end up ON my foot rather than under it and I scream like a big girl. I spray them whenever possible. I'm also lucky that my dog loves to hunt them down and catch them, playing with them like a toy until they are dead (and for awhile after they are dead - he picks up the body and flings it in the air to make them move...until he gets bored with it).

Consider spraying bug spray at the bottom of doors as a barrier if you think they could be coming from a neighbor. And if you have plants right next to the door, move or cut them back a little bit to make it less likely they will be attracted to that area.

If it's been raining alot, you'll see an increase in roaches, because they'll come inside because of all the water.

Roaches are probably the only bug I'm afraid of - I'll jump on furniture to get away from them. My dog's job is to catch the disgusting things and save me from them. :D

Oh - and they eat glue as well - like the glue on envelopes. But it seems to be only on old, discolored envelopes for some reason. And you can tell they've been there because the glue or envelope looks kind of...nibbled.

And you don't have to throw everything away - examine the packages. If they look undamaged, it's okay. If it looks like there are little tiny nibbles out of it, then throw it out. If it's in your refrigerator, it's safe.

Aww, this post is kind of cute! Roaches are pretty commonplace here so I've become completely oblivious to them. (Well, I don't like them, but killing them isn't a pain.)

First of all you shouldn't be too worried about bacteria because roaches are very clean insects, they are constantly cleaning themselves and our very own hands have more bacteria on them - even after washing - than roaches do.

From my experience, roaches don't go into the refrigerator, but they can eat pretty much anything and if you see one you should dispose of it -immediately-, put it outside, because they can survive 10 days with their head cut off and weeks without food. Squashing them isn't good because there might be eggs inside them so your best bet might be just to contain it in something and throw it outside. Also, they like darkness so check in all the dark corners if you want to find any.

Hope that helped? :)

they aren't really as bad as you might think actually. And they're not as rare over here as you might think either :P they usually live in large kitchens, especially those of restaurants and such. Why do you think we have all this food inspection over here in Europe? hhahaha

As for getting rid of them, it depends on how bad you can cope with them I think. Even though you might think you never had them you've always had them. This is just the first time you actually saw one I guess. But the best thing is to basically spray your room down every half year or so (i'm not sure) and really spray a lot. After which you just leave your house for a while, because otherwise you will feel sick. Those insect sprays shouldn't be used when you are going to use the space afterwards in the first place, so it's not really a surprise you didn't feel well after you used it.

I'm not very experienced with insect extermination though, I'm just telling you what they do in Indonesia, so that probably goes for Japan and the rest of Asia as well.

There was this one experience when I was very little where I had to spend a night on a very old dingy boat because the trip was so long. But anyway, on that boat I got to sleep in the "cabin" and there were so many roaches there that the walls were basically moving. When I think back to it, it sort of seems astonishing, but at the time I wasn't scared at all :S the boat sort of looked like this: http://hackingfamily.com/images/MalayFishingBoat4_CM.jpg

owh..roaches..haha..
their eggs are black and shape like pills..easy to spot..usually in drawers, under shelves and other dark and hidden places..they're kinda hard so it's not so gross to get rid of it.
i usually just hit cockroaches with a broom..or anything i can reach for..not until all the goo inside come out though..just enough to kill it..
don't scream or makes too much noise, the cockroaches will crawl away faster if u do so..or the opposite..haha..roaches can be mean sometimes..it's like..they can sense ur fear or something..
i think those stuffs would work..^^ best of luck!

ah... cockroaches are quite common in the US. Mostly because there are too many dirty people lol

Anyways, one of your neighbors could be lying food out which attracts them. They also don't like the cold.
Here's what you do, make sure you don't leave any kind of food unwrapped or out in the open because that will attract more. If you have an open box of any kind of food (pasta, cereal, ect) I suggest buying a few cheap containers. They cannot chew threw anything.

Also see if any of the stores have a spray for cockroaches what you bought it ok but the spray will prevent them from coming in, kill whats already in there, and it will also kill the eggs. When you get the spray, spray around all cracks that can come in from just keep a window open so you don't get sick from the fumes and keep it away from food and dinnerware. You can spray your sink too, just after you spray wait about ten minutes then run the hot water down the drain and clean the sink itself to avoid it getting on ur dishes. Put what you aleady have underneath your sink, one on the counter in a corner, and one near where you store food and maybe one near the garbage bucket.

That should take care of the problem. Give it a few days and if you still see some you may have to get a professional to come in.

Hope that helps and just remember cockroaches dont like clean houses. Clean as in no food anywhere not dust lol

I hope they'll live once it's winter ;___;
But I guess it's because of Japan's weather (too humid and not really cold in winter) and because of their garbage disposal system that they have so many roaches here.
All the people keep their food garbage in their apartments or outside on the balcony for many days and thus roaches and other insects are easily attracted -___-

I'm on my way now to go shopping for stuff .. .sprays, cleaning utensils, food containers etc.

I read through your comments and I don't think anyone mentioned it since it's more of a preventative measure- but you can get these little "house traps" that are sticky on the inside and well, the roach will go in for some food and never come out. It worked REALLY well for me. Before I moved into my apartment, I cleaned the place and then put the traps and came back in 2 days and I had about 8 roaches in 3 traps total. Then I did the usual of covering up any outside holes (kitchen fan, drains etc) and put fresh traps and in over a year I only caught one other baby one and had never seen another since.

I bought mine at the 100en shop but you can get them at conbini's too. It's a small box with the decoration of a house (there's even windows) and happy little cartoon roach families going "home". lol leave it to japan to make the most disgusting things cute :)

As I've already read your latest post and about your cleaning, I think you have taken the necessary actions, like locking food inside airtight boxes and cleaning. It's also good to seal any holes (i.e. between pipes and walls etc.), use tight sealed garbage bins, and if present repair any water spills or leakages. Actually, I remember in Singapore they used Pandan leaves (a green aromatic leaves used in cooking) to keep the roaches away. I don't know whether you'll be able to get that in Japan though... Home-made roach traps are easily made with a deep jar with some roach food inside, they won't be able to escape once inside ;)

Just a little "fun" fact; you may recall my masters project is about energetics in Ptarmigan (birds) running on treadmill, well, one of the articles I've read was about roaches on treadmill!!! They also had a cage of roaches in the lab in Manchester where I spent this last week XDDD They were used in plant biology experiments though.

Good luck on keeping the roaches away :D
