[Japan]: Strongest earthquake in 140 years!
Hello everybody!

As most of you might already know several strong earthquakes hit Northeastern Japan today, especially Miyagi (Sendai) and Fukushima, but the quake was also quite strong in Tokyo which is about 400km away from there!
As I'm over 1500km away from Tohoku area, I didn't feel ANYTHING AT ALL!!! It was a lovely day with awesome weather. Quite peaceful. I didn't know what was going on until people on Twitter sent me messages asking if I was ok.
I then figured that something must have happened in Japan and checked the news when I saw the horrible pictures on TV everywhere!
Houses, cars, ships washed away by tsunami waves as if they were toys. Fires everywhere!
At the present time 5 atomic power plants were shut down.
There's a fire in one atomic power plant in Fukushima and they've called out atomic emergency! Radioactive leaking hasn't been confirmed yet, but it's definitely EXTREMELY dangerous!

It's said to be the strongest earthquake in 140 years with a magnitude of 8.8!
Even the infamous earthquake in Kobe (1995) had "only" a magnitude of 6.8!!!!!

I've turned on the TV ever since then and the pictures are terrifying! The number of dead or missing people is rapidly increasing!
Luckily I was able to confirm that my friends in and around Tokyo are all safe, still waiting for respond of some, though. Most of them don't have electricity or gas, though!
8 prefectures seem to be without electricity right now!

This is just too much!

Although everything is perfectly fine here, people say that this might be a "century earthquake" and that the 8.8 earthquake might have been only a pre-quake!!!!! There are definitely several aftershocks to be expected and as far as the news go, they are right now going on in several parts of Japan. The aftershocks could go on for weeks or really start in a few weeks from now. Nobody really knows what will happen and if the worst is already over!!! And that's what worries me the most right now!

I'm going to Osaka next week and then in 2,5 weeks I'm off for spring vacation. Not close to the current epicenter, but still, nobody knows what will happen from now on!!!

It's so horrible what has happened and I hope that everybody will be safe!!! My thoughts are especially with the people in Miyagi and Fukushima Prefecture and all strongly affected areas as well as with all those people who are stuck in Tokyo right now and probably will have to spend the night in a train station or so :(

As much as I sometimes hate to live so far away from Tokyo and live in "no man's land" I really am happy about it right now as this area is one of the safest when it comes to earthquakes or tsunamis!!!

I hope everybody else is safe as well????!!!! ;_________________; It's so big that it's not only Japan, but also Hawaii, Taiwan and parts of America. The whole Pacific Ocean side has to be careful! Stay safe!!!

To everybody who sent me messages, thanks so much for worrying! For now I'm safe!

P.S.: As I posted on Twitter yesterday I had an extremely strong headache yesterday. Maybe one of the strongest ever! Usually I get headaches when there's extreme weather changes, but maybe this was a pre-quake-natural-disaster headache? :( No wonder it was so intense :/

I'm so glad you're OK and it's quiet where you are--what a horrible thing to have experienced. The video from Miyagi prefecture was terrifying.

It's really awful, and definitely among the largest quakes in modern times. But there will always be quakes, and I imagine Japan is no. 1 when it comes to handling these things (even if there is only so much one can do when tsunamis follow). The worst thing now is the atomic power plants, hope they get the cooling system going as soon as possible 0___0 I wish I could do something to help though, I really haven't been able to think of anything else today.

I'm so glad you and your friends are safe! *hugs*

I started feeling really sick just around the time that the earthquake was happening - obviously my body knew that something was wrong even if I hadn't heard anything about it yet...

I hope that today was the worst of it and there's no more to come! :(

Good to read you're safe!
As soon as I heard I called my japanese friend, who lives here as she's married to an English lad, to see if she'd heard from her family. They are well, but her dad's stuck in the office (he works in cental Tokyo) and he can't get home as the trains are not running.
But what sadness for all the people who have died/are unaccounted for.

It's great that not only tourists but also natural disasters usually skip that region, huh? Still, it's always scary as you don't know when or where something will happen. I hope the replicas will be weaker and end soon. Stay safe! : (

Choco, I was so worried about you! I was wondering how things were there. A few friends who live in and around Tokyo told me they felt the earthquake quite strong! Just like you I am waiting news from another friend who hasn't answer yet (T___T) I hope no harm reach her and now that you wrote about the power and gas, I think she probably is dealing with that situation.
I am super happy you are OK but please take care of yourself!

I've been watching the news all morning. There's even a website on ustream.com that has live coverage from TBS. President Obama is having a live conference, but it's about the economy, but several questions have been about Japan and its nuclear power plants...
I'm praying for everyone in Japan...I am glad you are safe!!! <3

Glad you're okay! :DDD All day at work I wondered where you lived but couldn't remember it. I checked lj as soon as I got home.

In 11 days I'm supposed to fly to Tokyo! DX I still don't know if I should cancel, seeing we don't know the after effects, but here all TV news are in panic, talking about catastrophic radioactive leaks, whereas my japanese teacher says it will be fine by the time I get there. I don't know what to believe anymore, we'll just wait and see I guess.

I'm so glad you are okay! I thought of you when I found out!

I think because of the earthquake I'm going to have to postpone my trip to Japan! It was only three weeks away too, I'm so disappointed! ;-; I was going to visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka and Maybe Miyajima, though I think most of those werent affected by the earthquake? So maybe in November if everything settles down - its so far away now again!

But again, I'm really glad you're okay! I saw the news, and the pictures of what looked like piles of little toy cars and airplanes of Real cars and airplanes!

I had almost forgotten that I did know someone in Japan and as soon as I thought of you I wanted to check to make sure you're okay. I'm so glad you're okay. T^T

Still while I'm extremely relieved for you, I hope your friends come up safely as well. And I feel so horrible about all this and about those that have been killed.

(Japan has always been a place I'd like to visit and I hope that these events and anything that follows them will not affect that dream to go there.)

I'm too overcome to say much else, but again, I'm very happy you're safe. *hugs*
