[Japan Life]: Internetless Lifestyle Update
Hello everyone!

How are you all doing? I hope you're all fine!!
Thank you so much for all your nice comments and tweets.

Unfortunately I'm still without internet, almost 1 month after moving!! I never expected it to take THAT long, but it's reality.
To be honest I don't miss the internet so much, but in less than a week I'm going on a short 5-days spring vacation trip and without internet it was almost impossible to plan it out or book hotels!
It won't be a great vacation, but I try to make the best out of it.
Oh, and I'm expecting to get internet in the 2nd week of April - at least I hope so!!

I thought it was time to write an update in case people were worried about me.

Luckily things didn't get any worse since my last entry.
After 2 weeks of cleaning day and night I managed to get the apartment somewhat clean. Of course there are spots that are so dirty that it's not possible to clean them completely, but at least it's quite an acceptable apartment now.
I also bought a few cute items at the 100 yen store to make myself feel more comfortable in here.
Photos will follow once I have proper internet.

I read in many comments that I shouldn't have given that guy any money.
Well, that's what I thought, too, and under normal circumstances I would have fought back more, but with everything else going on it was just "easier" (= less stressful) to just give in this one time. At least one issue less to worry about.
I was at least able to get the price down a bit in the end!

As for your great tips on what to do about my "internetless" situation, I checked all of them out, asked around, but nothing works here in this deep inaka place, so I just will have to wait patiently until my internet is set up.

As for the "car" allergy I mentioned in my previous entry, it wasn't the car! After some time I started sneezing and having teary eyes no matter where I was, so I went to the hospital to get a check-up and it turned out that I suddenly got allergic to Japanese cedar trees!! (*maybe I got a cedar overdose on Yakushima? XD ...)
One of my Japanese friends said that it's especially strong this year and a lot of people suddenly get hay fever although they never had it before.
I also got some meds. On strong days it's really quite horrible and I just want to scratch my eyes and nose out, but that's also because I never had an allergy before and am not used to the symptoms yet, I guess.
The check-up and meds were very expensive, though ....

Work is slowly getting a little better, too.
It's really difficult with only a few minutes to eat or use the toilet, but it's not impossible.
I still hope it's getting easier once I've truly settled down.
Once a week I also have to work in the morning (usually I work until 10pm!) and go to a local kindergarten for 60min.
This is the part of my new job that I like the least. The kids are cute and all and I've been teaching kids that age and even younger before, but it's just different, because I'm used to class sizes of 5-8 students and now I have 30+ all screaming at the same time (my poor ears ;__; ....).
The kindergarten stuff treats the kids really roughly when they don't follow suit. I was shocked!
And teaching them nonstop for 60min. is just ...... very, very exhausting! I try to do lots of calm activities - I'm just too old for that kind of stuff!
Actually I'm not the only one! One of my YOUNGER and topfit (very sporty!) coworkers said the same! So if he feels he doesn't have enough energy to do it, what should I say then, huh??!!

I'm slowly getting used to driving, too!
It's so convenient to have a car, but I also got super lazy!
In the past 4 years I had to use my bicycle every single day, but now I barely touch it (used it ONCE so far!!!!! although I payed 14.000yen for it!!) ..... not good!
Cycling to work is not impossible, but it would be a 30-40min. ride, so it's not gonna happen anytime soon.
I wouldn't mind going there, but leaving at 10pm when it's dark and cold? .... No, thank you!

I try to focus on the good things. With the new job I have more holidays!
Just a while ago I had a 3 days "weekend" and took the chance to go to Kobe!!
Kobe is so close now! I literally can leave my apartment and exactly one hour later am already at Sannomiya Station! (^_____^)v

I stayed in a hotel for 2 nights there (although it wasn't necessary as Kobe is really super close). The reason I stayed there was for the internet. I stayed up at night to at least partly plan my spring vacation.
As I've been to Kobe and surroundings many times before already, there wasn't that much for me to do other than shopping. Sightseeingwise I've seen and done almost everything already.

Here are some photos nevertheless:

Kobe, near Sannomiya Sta. on a sunny day!~

A great view from the 24th floor of the City Hall (left) and more outside of the center in Nagata City on my way to Nagata Shrine (right).

Snapshot at Nagata Shrine. Aren't they cute? I asked but they do not sell those cuties this year anymore, too bad! :(

Very close to Shin-Nagata Station: This sculpture is HUGE!!! Definitely worth getting off there just to take a photo of it!

At Kobe Harbor with the Kobe Tower in the background. I just love it there, it's really beautiful in its own way. I've been there a couple of times now, but mostly at nighttime so far.

Definitely beautiful enough to marry there and take nice wedding photos! ^-^;

I like that shot. The white building in the background is a hotel.

Plum blossoms are already out. Let's see how late the cherry blossoms will be this year!
I hope I won't miss them again! (x__X'') ... ^-^;

The coolest Starbucks building in whole Japan if you ask me is in Kobe's Kitano area!
I've been there before (just hit the "Kobe tag" to see more), but never actually went inside!
This time I did! Inside it looks a bit old-fashioned but still like a pretty normal Starbucks.

Yummy afternoon snack. I tried Lavender Tea Latte for the first time and am a HUGE fan of it now!!!!!

Of course, I went more than just once to Starbucks while being in Kobe. Just can't resist (^-^'') .....

Strolling around in the empty Kitano area where all the foreign houses are. I like the German one (left) the best.
I've been there before (again hit the Kobe tag if you wanna see more about it).
"No cake, no life" - YES SIR!! XD *LOOOL*

While walking through the shopping arcade of Motomachi there was this "exhibition" of "Future City Kobe"-ish with a lot of selfmade house models and stuff.
Some were really interesting and so detailed. Must have been a lot of work to make them!!

Yummy and cute food in Motomachi's China Town!~

I'm sure that ALL of you have seen them before. I just noticed that I probably never had taken a photo of 'em yet, so here we go XD
Maybe it's about time that I buy a pair, huh? XD

I also went to a Takarazuka show!
I'm not sure if you're familiar with it at all. I was aware of it but never really looked into it at all.
The reasons why I watched it was:
a) one of the people I know in Kobe is a huge fan and could easily get me a ticket for the day
b) It was on my way back from a sightseeing spot anyways
c) It's part of Japanese culture and I wanted to at least check it out once!!

I have to admit that it's not really MY world, but the costumes, songs and dances were awesome!!
Living so close to Takarazuka City and knowing somebody who's totally into it might actually get me to go again, though! :)

The Grand Theater's entrance.

One of the many fan shops.

It was very beautiful inside the theater.

That's where my seat was. Close enough and I also rented binoculars.

And that's what I got to see that day: Schiller's Don Carlos

Very close to the Takarazuka Theater (about a 5 min. walk!) is the "Osamu Tezuka Museum".
A must visit for ANYBODY who was EVER interested in manga because he started it all!

I was a huge fan of Kimba when I was little! ^-^;

Hitler?!!! .... and I forgot her name, but I liked that one a lot, too!!! (sucks that I can't use internet to look it up now, huh?)
Tezuka actually grew up in Takarazuka and also with the theater close by. I can't remember but I think his mother was a Takarazuka artist, too?
This influence is clearly displayed in his work (on the left side) the princess that also has the heart of a man.
See? That's how horrible I sound when I can only rely on my brain and not the internet! XD

And Astroboy, of course. For some reason I never knew much about Astroboy. Even nowadays!
I've seen one of the movies and I think back home I might have the first volume of the manga, but that's about it.
Definitely worth a visit if you're in Takarazuka anyways and a nice trip from Kobe or Osaka if you're looking for things to do! :)

Yesterday I went to a huge shopping center in the next city (no problem by car) which has one little "paradise corner" for me as it has Starbucks, Mr. Donuts and a food import shop right next to each other.
The import shop has German bread(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), muesli and other awesome stuff! (*___*)b

German muesli, grain bread, Leibniz cookies, pretzel snack and more!! :3

Lots of delicious German tea!

It's the FIRST time I've seen Twix in Japan! And Milky Way!
I've seen Snickers often, but I missed Twix sooooooooo much. I was happy to see it and couldn't resist, of course!

I also bought both "Bokura ga ita" books yesterday! Haven't watched the movie yet. Too many other things going on, right?

I love this season! No matter where you go, there are sakura products!!!! Even a sakura flavored Danone yogurt!!! Haven't tried it yet.

That one tasted ok. Can easily be found in convenient stores!

The sakura hand and nail cream is limited to this season only, so I couldn't resist and bought it at "The Body Shop"!
It's great!!! I really like the smell and it keeps my hands smooth and nice for hours! I'm thinking about getting a second one as long as they're still available :)

Although I live in a super small city (even smaller than before) I'm so close to bigger cities, it's really NICE!!!

I need to figure out VERY SOON where to go for Golden Week (it will be the first time in FIVE YEARS that I'll have those days off actually).
I'm thinking of going to Tohoku (Fukushima, Aomori etc.).
In summer I have 2 weeks, so I'm thinking of doing 1 week of Okinawa and 1 of Hokkaido.
If I really manage to do that, then by that time I will have been to almost everywhere in Japan!! O_O
That's one of my ultimate goals anyways! :D
Of course there are still smaller towns and stuff left, but I will have done all the areas, almost all prefectures and all major tourist spots!!

For Kansai area I can just do day trips on weekends (not so many things left here anyways, seen almost everything already XD).

Ok, that was a rather long entry, but I think you can clearly see that I'm (almost) back to my normal self now that things are slowly improving!
Expect more once I have a proper internet connection!

Hope to read you again soon! :3333
Thanks for staying tuned! :)

Oh you didn't really like Takarazuka? Too bad.
I think it also depends on the troupe you go to watch.

Flower has the most budget so their costumes and sets are very lavish.
I've seen Star once when they did Oceans 11.
I've seen Snow before and didn't really like it either but my friend is a HUGE snow troupe fan. (Well she really likes Otozuki Kei)
Moon is my favourite and I personally think they have put on the best productions of all the ones I've been to. (I've seen them 3 times) Their top male and female will graduate at the end of April but I really like the two top males that are co-taking over that role. (Their next production is Romeo & Juliet and I hope to go see it before I go leave Japan)

Hope you are enjoying life in Kansai ^^ You should message me up (if you want to) when you're in Kobe area again. I live about an hour away.

I didn't say that I didn't like it. Actually I was surprised how nice it was. I just always thought and still think that it's not my world ;)

I hear a fan speaking!? ^-^

Sure!! :D

A cedar tree allergy? I think you owe that car an apology, dear =P But yeah, I know how much it sucks to suddenly have allergies. When M-san came to visit, we went on a Safari and I guess I'm allergic to giraffes. My eyes puffed up and I turned all pink and scratchy... Ugh. It's annoying. I don't see giraffes every day though. You and those trees....good luck!

As for the timing for breaks and such at work, you'll get faster. When I first started working, we only had 10 minute breaks every two hours. To me, that wasn't enough. I couldn't do anything. After a few months, I was able to eat, go to the bathroom and re-do my make up in ten minutes =)

The Sakura scent from Body Shop is limited there? They sell it in NY year round! A friend sent me three bottles just recently...
I never go to Body Shop myself, so I don't know what's limited and what isn't, but he keeps me stocked up on Sakura because he knows it's my favorite.

Muh, I look at your pictures and get jealous. Whenever I go out, I never take as many pictures and such nice ones. It's always me and my friends doing something odd lol.

Aahhhhh! You must let me know if "Bokura ga ita" is good. I'm still reading through Kami-sama no Karute, but as soon as I finis I want to read that one =D =D

Well, at least you usually won't run into giraffes very often, right? XD

Wow, awesome! I still need to figure it out, but I hope I can eventually :)

It is limited, yes. Too bad. Why?? Unfair ;__;

If I ever have time to read it, yes, I will let you know :3

I am so happy you are feeling better and are more yourself!

About the allergy: I know just what you mean: I had never had any respiratory allergies till I arrived in the US, and acquired hay fever. I just buy medications available in the drugstore [cheaper!]. Anything containing chlortrimeton is very effective. The unfortunate thing, the doctor told me, is that once you have an allergy, others items [say pollens] trigger it as well.

I know what you mean about the sakura products. Takizawa Hideaki has a butai in April, and they sell sakura ice cream [yummy] at intermission!

I am quite fond of Tohoku. I think the region has much charm, and large parts are unscathed. Have you been there before? If so, you have probably been to Matsushima, a definite must. But other than this obvious place, may I strongly suggest Hiraizumi [where Yoshitsune died, small shrine]. I found it a really charming town, with very interesting old temples and peaceful ancient gardens. I also liked nearby the Geibi-kei gorge [one visits in a river boat]. The area around Naruko Onsen is also attractive.

Matsushima escaped serious damage thanks to all its islands. And Sendai, while the port was destroyed, the city itself, being on higher ground, didn't suffer too much.

And thanks for the nice photos. I particularly like the one with the sailing ship and the bronze figures.

I really hope I will be ok once I'm back in Europe, though :/

Yes, I've been in Fukushima (Aizu) and Sendai + Matsushima about 4 years ago :)
The only reason I've not been there much is that I used to live close to Kyushu and thus Tohoku (and Hokkaido) are just toooooooooooooooooooooooo far away :(
When did you visit? :)

Thanks! ^-^

I was there almost 5 years ago, and did a fairly comprehensive trip. I went to Nyuto Onsen and Haguro-san. It's similar to Koya-san, but with an atmosphere of its own, and 2700 steps up a mountain, [though I only did them coming down]. I also went to Sado Island. That's a beautiful place, with an old gold mine that's quite interesting to visit, also a real center of taiko drums.

I am planning to go back this October: just Sendai, Matsushima, Hiraizumi, and then I will go south to the Ise peninsula, where I have never been. I try to visit new places on every trip.

Wait, where are you again? Kansai? I'm pretty close to Nagoya so let me know if you want to meet up near Osaka or something. I have like a month of spring vacation without pay so I will be super bored and in need of something cheap to do like sightseeing minus shopping!

In my area there is a chain of shops called Kaldi which mainly sells coffee beans but also has lots of imported foods. You can find German chocolate there and lots of cheese/meat/wine/cookies/etc. Also if you go to Tohoku there is a chain you can find in Koriyama and Fukushima stations called Jupiter... they are another coffee bean shop which sells imported foods.

I know it's pricey but it's soooo nice to have good cheese and also things that are familiar once in a while ;)

BTW you might remember I lived in Fukushima for 3 years and I went to some lovely places there so let me know if you want any info... I can also ask my friends who live there about info if you want.

I personally recommend Lake Inawashiro and Mt Bandai (a bit west of Koriyama) as well as Goshikinuma (5 colored lakes) which is GORGEOUS. I went to Abukuma Cave which is quite big and interesting but I think I may be a bit claustrophobic and didn't enjoy it as much as I might have. But they age wine in the caves and sell it at the gift shop, I believe. That might be an interesting thing to try.
If you trust the water and are not worried about radiation there is a famous local water park called Hawaiians in Iwaki on the coast. They have all kinds of pools, saunas, hot tubs, as well as an onsen and Hawaiian style dancing shows.

I think you've already been to Aizu... did you go to Kitakata?

One thing I always wanted to do was go to this place called British Hills. It's kind of a themed place for Japanese people who want a foreign experience. I think it's in Fukushima, because I heard that some Koriyama kids went on field trips there. I was always curious to go but never went.

Yes, of course I remember, dear! :)

Mt. Bandai is on my list, but I really haven't made any plans yet. I already visited Fukushima (Aizu) and Sendai, Matsushima, so I might wanna go up further north to Aomori and stuff. Also because I might be able to still see cherry blossoms there towards the end of April / beginning of May?! ^-^;

Thanks for all the awesome recs! :)

Waaah I've always wanted to go watch Takarazuka!!! It's one of THE things to do in Kobe :D So lucky you got to go!

I was really worried about you, I'm glad things turned out a little better that made me somehow relieved :) Btw I have major allergies myself during spring/summer, just a few months now and my nose will be running like the Niagara falls... XD

If I get my thesis done this spring I'll try to get myself a trip to Okinawa as well this late summer/fall, since that's always been my ultimate dream and seeing how I didn't get to go to Tokyo this spring I might as well splurge when I do go there ;) hopefully I'll be able to save up the money to go as well, I really want to go to the most Southern Ryukyu islands and that'll take a lot of plane tickets XD

I can't wait to hear from you again <3 *hugs*

It's nice to know that you are doing better in your new place and job. It must have been hard cleaning your apartment. Guys can't really be reliable when it comes to maintaining the place, ne?

Good luck to your spring break vacation! And your summer vacation, too. I really admire you for exploring Japan north to south, east to west. =)

And your Kobe pictures remind me of my trip there last January. The "No cake no life" signboard will surely catch your attention like what it did to me.

I watched 僕等がいた on its premiere showing and I am looking forward to the part 2. I didn't read the books but the movie was entertaining. It made me reminisce the feeling of being inlove. =)

I hope your allergies will get well.

I'd love to go to a Takarazuka show! ♥ I've read a lot of things about them and their plays and I'd like to see how they perform and sing! *__*

Sakura products! >///< I'd like to try the Danone Bio! Seems yummy! :3

I'm still wondering if I buy Bokura ga ita manga or not. In Spain is nearly complete published but I don't know if I might like it or not! -___-;;; Nowadays I'm hooked on Kimi ni todoke manga (I want to watch the film, too!) but I don't know if Bokura ga ita is a lot more tragic... XD

Your photos look amazing as always! ♥ And the Tezuka ones are so cute! :D The manga of the girl with a boy's heart is Ribbon no Kishi (I've bought the spanish edition not to much time ago ;P).

Take care and good luck with everything! I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon! *hugs* ^__^

Such cool pictures!! First I'm happy that things are improving there for you, and that you've finally gotten to the bottom of your allergy ^_^ I'm allergic to the pollen that's on trees here, which sucks b/c I live in an area where there's loads of them! And I have a white car, and will come outside to it being yellow due to the trees taking shots on it =_= I have to deal b/c the allergy medication makes me feel sleepy.

But back to the pics, I'll have to visit Kobe as well when I make my way over there. The piggy treats though look very yummy, as does everything else you photographed ^_^

I'm glad it's getting better and that you are already enjoying some of the things/niceties you hoped to find there.

I didn't comment last time because people were saying more or less what I wanted to, but I had hoped that all that negativity was indeed stress from the new start - even if you told us to leave it aside 'cause you were aware of it. X3

I had advised you not to take this job, but I think that if you find good things as you're doing now, then whatever you do will turn out fine. YOU will make it turn fine, whatever comes. ^___^ I'm so proud of you~ It may be because you're used to living alone, but overcoming difficulties as you do is not easy. What you've accompliished so far is great! Plus, you are finally closer to the city and can socialize more now -- err once you settle down. Good luck! (Wish I was there too! X3)

Thank you!
I am? I'm not sure about that. I guess I am?! XD

Not really. I've already been to Fukushima, so it's probably going to be further up in the north like Aomori. That way I'll also be able to catch the cherry blossoms up there in May ^-^;;
I just came back from Yokohama, Chiba etc. and it's not that far away from Fukushima anyways.
